SMAK 7 Penabur Has Special Way to Build Student Character

JAKARTA, NNC – SMA Kristen 7 Penabur Jakarta as educational institution tries to develop character education in its students. For the first time, character building was embodied in a musical that was held on Sunday, June 3, 2018 in the school hall.

The first musical performance of SMAK 7 is titled “Hairspray” which was an adaptation of the work of Scott Witman and Marc Shaiman. The cast was the students of class X and XI that performed in front of about 500 audiences consisting of alumni, parents, invited guests, as well as teachers, and school employees.

Dr. Amran Budiarto Theodorus, manager of the field of education at Penabur revealed that musical drama was a mean of character education for students. Many character values could be learned from the show, starting from the creative process to the story in the drama itself.

“From the process, students can learn leadership, integrity, commitment, and humility,” said Dr.Amran, in a press release on Monday (6/4/2018).

The “Hairspray” show was inseparable from the guidance of four art teachers teaching at SMAK  7. The role art was guided by Handy Wijaya as a director and dance art by Evi Novitaningsih, S.Pd., as a choreographer. While music art was guided by Firnando Sinaga, M.Sn., as music director and art in the stage by Ansupirto Bayu Naibaho, S.Sn.

The storyline of “Hairspray” itself also taught the value of fighting spirit to all students and audience. The story of the struggle of a girl named Tracy Turnblad in realizing the dream of becoming a star in a television station. However, to realize the dream was not as easy as she imagined. There were various obstacles that she must face to reach her dream.

Not only character development, musical drama “Hairspray” was also a form of school appreciation of the non-academic potential of students. Head of SMAK 7, Dra. Duma M.S. Hutahaean, M.M., revealed that “Hairspray” was a place for students to channel their artistic talents.
